The Nicknames

| Thursday, April 8
I've only been on the Battlestar Galactica bandwagon for about a year and a half, but I can honestly say it's probably one of my all-time favorite shows. And one of my absolute fave characters on the show has got to be Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. She's hot, mysterious, and seriously bad-ass.  Because of my love for said character, and the fact that we share the same first name, spelled the same and everything, my geek friends started calling me "Kara Thrace." I even went so far as to be Starbuck for Halloween this past year. <-- See?

Then my poor husband started getting called Mr. Thrace. Not Anders or anything cool like that, just Mr. Thrace. That eventually turned into us getting called collectively "The Thraces." As in, where are we going to host Game Night? At the Thraces'. Who's bringing the movie? The Thraces. Now we are even stored in our friends' phones with those nicknames.

And then, my husband is also a "Toaster." This came about when we were first starting to play the BSG board game. In the game, you are either a cylon, not a cylon, or a sympathizer. The first three times we played, my husband was a cylon every time, and his covert actions cost the humans the game. I told him he was sleeping on the couch. Then on multiple occasions we have BOTH been cylons in the game, so apparently, now, to our friends, we are "Toasters," and they joke about it whenever they get the chance.

This is one of the many reasons I love my geeky friends. Do any of you have awesome nicknames given to you by friends? Any of them awesomely nerdy?

Well, while I've never been a Battlestar fan (I'm sorry... it's really just far too soap-opera-ish as far as acting style for my liking), I'm a HUGE Stargate nerd. I had a few online geeky friends start referring to me as Teyla, which ended up leading to my online nick for a few years, JediTeyla (I am also a HUGE Star Wars nerd). Some started calling me Kaylee for a little bit, because apparently I am very much like Jewel Staite's character in Firefly (which I still have yet to watch... *sigh* and I call myself a sci-fi nerd).

Haha, that is awesome! ^_^ I haven't gotten into Battlestar Galactica, but I think that is because the show confuses the hell out of me. I probably need to start from the beginning. :P

Most of mine and Jen's friends call us our character names from WoW. A lot of them combine our character names too, 'cause we're always together!

I've never watched much Stargate, but I've been told I need to watch SG:U if nothing else. And I'm so jealous. I've always wanted to be a Jedi!

Oh my god, Stargate SG-1 is amazing. My wife and her mom introduced me to Stargate years ago and I still have yet to see every episode!!!

I also love the original movie. :P

And Star Wars is -AWESOME-!!! Yaaay Sci-Fi nerds!

I did really like the original Stargate movie, so maybe I'll start Netflixing some of the shows. Even my in-laws who aren't huge sci-fi nerds like it. Um, and yea, Star Wars is one of the best things EVAH!

And I love that you girls are called by your WoW names. Some of my husband's friends are like that, too. I played for a while, but I'm too ADHD to stick with any one game for very long!

You're a Geek! omgawesome! (is very excitable about this type of thing)
I didn't watch the original Battlestar glactica series, but I did watch the revisioned verison recently (which made me really really want to, are they continuing with that?) And I watch Caprica right now, which i understand is a prequel of sorts...

@TabithaVenasse: Watch Firefly! Especially if you are anything like Kaylee, she's amazing, and such a cutie.

@Lariats and Lavender: you play wow? what server?

@Kara, again: sorry for spamming your comment box. I didn't realize there were people on here as into this stuff as I am. I got over-energetic about typing!

@VBean It's all good. :) I'm glad you're excited. If I can bring a bunch of geek girls together, then I'm all for it!

I can't really deal with the cheese factor of the original BSG, but yeah, it's the RDM re-imagining that I'm obsessed with! It's done and over, sadly, but yeah, Caprica rocks pretty hard, too! (And Firefly is quite possibly my other all-time fave!)

I loved BSG, and I liked the character of Starbuck, but I really don't think Katee Sackhoff is a good actor. Her emotional scenes on BSG did not touch me, and if you have seen her on 24 this season, there's not much of an argument. I hate to say it, but I hope she doesn't show up in any of my other favorite shows.

Kara was always my favourite, although I was sad that she and Lee never hooked up in the end. I LOVED her - right through the brattiness and the tantrums and everything. That girl was HOT.

Starbuck is definitely one of the coolest characters in any TV show ever. I have to say I'm a bit jealous that your name is Kara.

That board game sounds like fun!

I loved BSG! Just the other day I was thinking about how I kind of miss watching it. I may need to go back to some of the episodes and reunited with my cylon love.
